SUNDAY JUMP SHOOTING
On Sunday morning, the day was
a carbon copy of the previous and
sunny with little wind. I managed
to bag just two ducks from five
that came in from 6:30 to 9am
and then decided to head off and
jump shoot a couple of ponds.
Jump shooting is alot of fun and
where you can pick up a few birds
as they look to find quieter smaller
ponds to hole up on which have no
hunter pressure. Often you will see
ducks sitting on water in the middle
of a paddock, which is difficult to
stalk and get close for a shot.
The best jump ponds are those on
the edge of a hill or with high sides,
so you can sneak up to the edge of
the dam and get within better range
to take shots as the birds get up.
I managed to bag two fat mallard
drakes and a lone grey duck on
two ponds. So, with a total of
eleven ducks for the weekend,
it wasn’t all bad considering the
hot and clear conditions.
The locals often say in Northland
“welcome to the winterless
north,” and it was another
May opening weekend with
summer like weather for sure.
Stalking ponds on Sunday was a good
option with a few birds bagged.
