The best surf rods have quality
blanks, guides and components all
designed to help cast your bait out
further. I would recommend looking
at Tica, Kilwell, Okuma, Daiwa and
Abu Garcia models for surf rods to
suit your budget, as they have all
been proven here in Godzone on
our conditions and target species.
To give you an idea, the top end
surfcasters are going for around
$650 – $1100, while mid-range is
$350 - $600 and then value rods
would be under $300. It pays to
get some advice from a trusted
surfcaster or even borrow a mate’s
rod for a few casts if you can
before making a purchase. You can
then get first hand experience on
the rod or model, and length to
determine if the rod suits you.
I have had a few mates use my
Tica surf rods and who then also
bought them after trialling over a few
surfcasting trips on the west coast.
Surfcasting is a bit like driving of the
tee when golfing, it is all about timing
and not always about having the
biggest club (or rod) on the planet.
“This 4.5m (14ft plus) surfcaster is super light, with
a sensitive tip for feeling the subtlest of bites,
while still providing plenty of power through
the blank for casting and fighting fish.”
Okuma’s Flite Surf Rod is a high
modulus 46T carbon blank with
cutting-edge technology to deliver
power, sensitivity, and durability.
