Having completed a mechanical 
engineering apprenticeship and 
degree some time ago - back when 
there were no computers, just hand 
skills and slide rules - I learned to 
make things, not just write about 
them. That meant designing, 
building, and repairing metalwork.
But my interest in knives and hand 
tools started from an actual need 
and not a desire to make things 
that would cut. An old file was 
forged into knife for cutting about 
anything around the workshop 
or factory, a high-grade tool steel 
was shaped and hardened into 
a chisel to suit, you simply made 
what you needed back then.
From there my interest grew 
in knives. It started from a need 
and turned into experimentation 
with different steels and then
