like movement in the water, and 
this helps attract fish to strike.
Over the course of the morning 
before the wind picked up and 
we had to call it a day, the smaller 
Motor Oil softbaits helped land 
several fish with a few kept for 
dinner and the others all released.
Switching over and changing 
things up helped on a slower 
day when it was super calm and 
cold.  I guess the fish are just like 
us in winter and take a while to 
kick start the day, maybe a coffee 
scented lure is next on the cards?
"The baitfish we saw 
jumping were mostly 3–4 
inches long, so downsizing 
to the 3.75" lure made 
sense. In the darker, 
shaded water around the 
islands, the green Motor 
Oil colour also offered 
stronger contrast."
Trying brighter colours over 
the morning, and these weren’t 
taken by fish and the Motor Oil 
performed best on the day.
Another snapper is netted carefully 
to be checked then released.
The Motor Oil colour 
resembled the shellfish 
or worms the snapper 
were feeding on which 
they dropped when 
landed in the boat.
