Keeping an eye on your sounder 
while out in deeper water (30m+) 
is necessary and look out for good 
fish sign hard on the bottom, or 
any baitfish marks down deeper 
for potential snapper targets 
lingering around the area.
We always start out fishing with 
different jigs and colours to see 
which lure gets the most interest 
on the day.  This can help fill your 
bin and get in on the action, if 
your mate is hooking more fish 
then switch jigs or weights.
I always take a range of colours, 
weights, and spare assist hooks 
to change out with pliers over the 
course of the day and try things.
WORKUP ACTION
Most Auckland based anglers 
love spring workups, they are 
an amazing natural experience 
when gannets rain down from 
above into the baitfish schools, 
while dolphins and even whales 
help to round up and feed on the 
pilchards below.  The fishing action 
can be simply red hot but there 
are some things to consider.
When heading out wide in the gulf 
over spring looking to find workup 
action, I always look to find dolphins 
first and track them by shadowing 
along behind with the help of 
binoculars and no doubt the gannets 
will also be tagging along, waiting 
for them to find the pilchards.
Most anglers will go out into the 
middle of the gulf from 30-40m 
to look for the workup action 
but often they are also found 
closer in and especially off the 
western Coromandel, often just 
out off the Coromandel harbour.
