GO SHALLOW FIRST
We positioned the boat in a deeper 
hole between shallower sand/mud 
banks and deployed the Lowrance 
Recon trolling motor to hold us 
in the strong 5-6 current.  The 
berley bag was soon out, and fresh 
mullet baits cast out the back on 
running rigs with Black Magic 
KLT 7/0 hooks and 4oz sinkers.
The brownish murky water found 
throughout west coast harbours is 
probably a key factor to why the 
fishing is so good, as fish don’t feel at 
risk swimming in the shallows when 
the water visibility is poor and offers 
The Kaipara fish are 
in excellent condition 
for early winter.
