However, I have found the 
Hyperglide 13x to be much better 
than other braids with considerably 
less tip wraps created by windy 
conditions.  There is nothing 
worse than having to retie leader 
on the boat, wasting fishing time 
and fish catching opportunities 
from gear failure.  So Hyperglide 
gets a big tick on this point.
For surfcasting, the 30lb (PE3) 
Hyperglide 13x braid is my preferred 
line as it still only has a diameter 
of just 0.285mm, and it means I 
have more ‘firepower’ on hand 
to winch in big eagle rays that 
we commonly encounter when 
fishing off Northland’s west coast 
beaches.  Again, the round structure 
of the Hyperglide 13x braid helps 
to achieve longer 100m+ casts to 
where the good snapper are found.
For jigging and top water (stick 
baiting), the 50lb (PE6) or 80lb 
(PE8) ratings are best, also matched 
with heavier leaders such as Black 
Magic’s Tough Trace or Fluorocarbon 
60-100lb line depending on the 
depths and areas we are fishing.
The 300m spools available are also 
a good buy and retail for around $99 
from tackle shops.  With winter upon 
us and many anglers not getting out 
on the water as much, it’s a good 
time to respool your reels with fresh 
braid ready for spring and summer.
The editor found the Hyperglide 13x 
to be an excellent braid achieving good 
distance when casting softbaits.
