Top Kit Katanza Knives H aving worked in the steel industry for nine years, I got the opportunity to study different types of steel from one of the best metallurgists in the country, Gary Williams. Gary not only knew just what the different types of steel were, but where and why they were used in a range of applications. This knowledge interested me as an engineer, it also interested me fisherman and a hunter knowing what steels could be used in firearms or knives. As the years went by, I was noticing our local access to quality top end knives at reasonable prices was becoming less. Sure, there is Svord, a great knife with high end carbon steel but they tended to rust if not coated in some form veggie oil and many anglers didn’t look after them well. I could see an opportunity to design and put together some high-end knives, using a top grade nonrusting stainless and that’s when I started researching Japanese stainless steel and their methods of blade making, especially layered Damascus. Every angler needs a good knife for filleting, boning, and skinning. Rod builder Graeme Paterson has turned his hand to designing and sourcing quality blades that are super sharp. BY GRAEME PATERSON /FISHINGINGODZONE 45 The blades are all required to have some flexibility but aren’t too thin, so wont bend easily and be too hard to sharpen.
