The water was now disappearing from our spot, so we packed up and headed north to find a sandbank around low tide to fish. We picked a bank with gutter that had surf pounding down on it but didn’t score any bites after nearly 45 minutes. We headed south again and found a clean area of beach with less plankton and weed to cast out and leave the rods in the holders to enjoy a beer while we fished the last hour of the contest. Just before the 3pm finishing time and Brian’s rod went over, and he pulled in a good trevally which we tagged. We asked the official how many fish he had tagged in his 1km stretch of beach today and the trevally was only his fifth fish all day! So, just as we thought it had been a tough day of fishing in messy conditions, so we headed back to weigh the snapper, trevally and kahawai trifecta.
