KAHAWAI ON THE BOARD As we waited in the small line to weigh our fish, we talked to several other anglers who all said it had been a hard day on the beach, with the weed on the line and sweeping conditions making for the lack of fish. Still, with over 300 anglers there had been some nice fish caught and we were surprised they didn’t weigh Brian’s trevally or snapper, and my kahawai which went just over 1.6kg was kept. The top six kahawai make the cut, so just maybe. When the prize giving started, I went up to give out the snapper tackle prizes for the top three fish as we had donated a special Lanza surfcaster that Graeme Paterson had built for the contest. The fish were all good size around the 3kg mark and while I was on stage I looked at the six remaining kahawai up on the pole and wondered if one was mine. After sitting back down with the crew, I was soon called up to collect a swag of tackle and a Kilwell fish smoker for fifth prize – stoked! The heaviest kahawai of 2.470kg with cash prize of $3000 went to my cousin’s hubby Levi Campbell. Overall, a fun day out on the west side and with a good turnout for the organisers to help the local schools. Levi Campbell from Dargaville scored the top $3k prize with a 2.470kg kahawai. The top six heaviest kahawai winners, with editor Matt Hewetson sneaking into fifth place. Feature 24 FISHING IN GODZONE MAGAZINE
