I wanted to test this theory more, so switched to a dark green Z-Man Motor Oil 7” softbait and added more sauce, this produced my best 5-6kg fish of the day. Muzza kept fishing over the morning using the Nuclear Chicken softbaits and although got a lot of hits, he was going through the lures with their soft tails getting lost. Becoming frustrated from the bitten off tails, he also changed things up and went with a large Crush City Imposter lure, which looks like the Spanish mantis shrimp that have invaded the harbour, and the snapper feed on as they often have them in their stomachs when filleted. He smeared it with more sauce and got interest in this new lure and landed another nice 2.5kg fish for the bin. We had only caught around six fish over the course of the morning, but they were all good fish ranging from 2.5kg – 6.5kg. This was quiet fishing for the graveyard, and it might have been due to the recent storm and all the freshwater flushed down the harbour? Using scented softbaits made a key difference, while on other days there the fish just smashed any type of lure you dropped to the bottom. The benefit of fishing different lures with your crew is you can discover what is working best or not. Around midday and after some lunch just before low tide with the fast current dropping, we could drop down to 1oz jig heads and Muzza took us into shallower water closer to the beach. As we drifted, he hooked a bigger fish on a Nuked Chicken softbait and after another good battle, the best fish of day was on the board. It was an old fish with worn down teeth from smashing mussels, with shells spilling from its packed guts from its anus. We weighed it and it was just under 20lb, going 18.5lb and it was spent after the taxing fight, so we kept it for the smoker. Seven good fish was enough for us, and we headed back to the ramp. Another adventure on the mighty west coast with a feed for the family, happy days. The snapper caught at the graveyard over autumntime are in prime condition. “I switched to a Z-Man Red Bone 7” with some added Secret Sauce and instantly got more interest and bagged a fat 3kg fish.” Feature 34 FISHING IN GODZONE MAGAZINE
