DIRTY SEA With a start time of 9am, we wanted to be on the beach at daybreak and in a good spot as you fish along a twenty kilometre stretch of beach north of Baylys Beach, which covers to the north and south of Omamari Gap where the prize giving is held. I drove up the beach on the Friday to do a recon of good spots as the strong 40knot+ easterly had dropped, but the swell was looking to pick up with the tail of the storm going down the west coast. I found a great looking hole with deep water which looked promising and rigged up to catch a trevally which I regard as a top bait for big snapper and which the 7kg+ fish was caught on last year. As I was setting up the rod and getting into the wetsuit, a family in a ute drove past and yelled out “This is the spot for tomorrow bro!” and laughed as they headed north. “I soon landed a kahawai that looked about 1.5kg, but I thought might be too small to make the prizes, but we tagged it just in case.” We tagged the fish as with the dirty and sweepy conditions, the fish numbers would be down on the previous year. Brian landed a fat pannie snapper on the Long Reach rig on the fresh trevally. Feature 18 FISHING IN GODZONE MAGAZINE
