b'Feature The best fish of the trip hit a pillySECOND DAYright in the middle of the day! Getting up and eating breakfast while on the drive-up past Colville, we stopped at Fantail Bay to fish the rocks here, with a good current drifting past with birdlife and even a seal feeding out in the water. It looked promising and with cloudy conditions and low tide at midday I was hopeful the bigger fish were about. It started off slow and we only had a few bites and not much showed up in our berley trail apart from a few sprats. After a couple of hours, we moved across to the other side and still had no interest. With low tide approaching just after midday, we packed up and moved back down the coast to another large rock that had kelp with plenty of crabs and kina in the rock pools. We cast out pilchards and I went for a large bait, using the kahawai head to try and entice something bigger.Beau was exploring the rock pools when my old Kilwell Lime Tip rock rod that I had owned since 2007 bent over hard and the line screamed.I ran over to pick up the rod just as it stopped. What was that dad!?Beau commented.I wound in and checked the empty hook as I replied, That was the fish we have been looking for mate.Over the next couple of hours, we found out there were a lot of smaller fish here and most just under size, but then a pack of feisty kahawai arrived in the berley and Beau had such a good time fighting the fish that it really didnt matter the larger fish werent around this afternoon. He was enjoying the non-stop action, and we now had some fresh bait. After a good afternoon session getting Beau up to speed with baiting, casting and fighting small fish off the rocks, we headed back to our base to have dinner and chill out, getting aWith a lot of small fish around, good nights sleep and then get up atgoing with a big bait such as this 6am to fish the morning outgoing tide. kahawai head will attract big fish.56FISHING IN GODZONE MAGAZINE'
